Totally agree with both of Rand's answers, however, I think we need to hone in a little on what the new close reason should be, so I thought I'd add my thoughts... New close reason See Rand's answer for reasoning/precedent, however, I believe the text should be a little different. The primary aim should be to catch/close low quality content, which can be ...

This may not make a huge difference, but since new users are often high on the blame list for the poor-quality stuff, we should change the Puzzling Tour to actually reflect this site. I think this is probably a low-effort but some-reward step we could take, so why not do it. If you don't think it needs to be changed, go take the Puzzling Tour right now and ...

To expand on my comment, which apparently got deleted when the question was migrated, Puzzling.SE already has a sandbox. It's not as active as the one on PPCG, and I don't know whether all kinds of puzzles are accepted there, but it exists nonetheless.

This is an answer that would potentially be posted on my most-popular puzzle, Hearken, now, and listen close! Meta-note (this is in response to the question above, and not part of my actual answer): I have included spoilers in this answer, in response to point #4 in the original post above. This is mostly to demonstrate that it is ineffectual to do so. The ...

It's too soon to be able to empirically evaluate any data about the sandbox. Data on data.stackexchange.com is only updated weekly, so many of the riddles posted to the sandbox won't even be in that data yet. Subjectively, however, it appears to me that the sandbox is having the desired effect and is working well. From my own perspective, it seems that ...

I know this isn't necessary, but I would like feedback on this word-puzzle (plus I am unsure what tag I should use). Not a snail's word A word of four letters make me, Related to speed I may be. Unlike a snail, I am not slow, Use a magnifying glass and you'll know! Take off my first and flip me around, And what do you know, now I'm a sound! ...

A chatroom for detecting and discussing low-quality puzzles. Whether or not we implement a new custom close reason for 'bad' puzzles as proposed in my other answer here, we need people to be aware of it and of any new puzzles coming in that should be closed using it, otherwise there's no point. Emrakul mentioned in comments on another meta post that part of ...

A custom close reason for 'bad' riddles/puzzles. Normally, the way to deal with 'bad' questions on Stack Exchange is simply to downvote them, while closing is reserved for questions which are off-topic, opinion-based, or otherwise inappropriate for the site. However, certain sites which have a consistent problem with floods of low-quality questions have ...

I mentioned this in a comment but I think it ought to go in as an answer. If we have requirements and standards (as in the some of the suggestions for the tutorial and help center) they really ought to go in a prominent place on the "Ask Question" page right above where the Title box is. The yellow rectangle on the right is not good enough. That's where ...

Wrap-up: the making of Reassemble the riddles! This is not a solution to the puzzle, but provides the puzzle poser’s thoughts on its creation. This type of answer has been approved by the community. Caution: This post may contain spoilers. I had these four riddles written down so long ago (at least a year) that it's hard to recall exactly how the idea ...

Wrap-up, the making of: The Case of the Missing rebus This is not a solution to the puzzle but provides notes from its poser. This type of answer has been approved by the community. Caution: This post contains information about the solution. Often (almost always?) construction of a puzzle presents a more challenging puzzle than does the resultant ...

Haven't posted a proper riddle before, and figured I should probably let someone give it the ol' Sniff Test (TM) before letting it loose in the wild. Apologies to Riley...[xkcd comic] What am I? To start? I negate winter's chill My heart? Its roots grow deep and sound In the end? Surely that (if you will) My code is my self until found.

Sealed Tree Logs Make Five My friend invited me to a club, however, he stipulated that I must first NAME the club before I could join. I asked how on earth I could possibly know the name, and he provided me this picture: What is the name I need to tell my friend to join the club? And what is the relevance of the name of this question? Sandbox I have ...

So I've read quite a few (although never been able to answer). Kind of had an idea for a riddle on my way home. Possibly rubbish, but worth a punt in here: what do you guys think? Round and Round, Driven by Man or Horse. An enemy of Power, Repeated Throughout History. Enjoyed with Bacon and Tea, When I arrive, I change everything. What Am I?

Not sure if this is still used at all, but I'm looking for feedback. Amber, leather, fruit, or pine. Whiskey, crackers, never wine. White and red across a sea. Or clad twice in sable, burgundy. Hidden, swung, hooked, flown. Suited, bottled, jumping, thrown. You'll never get me if you're slow. Who I am? Well, "You don't know..."

Text building blocks How about making a common list of responses that can be used to improve posted riddles? Mostly the riddles aren't bad, just need some more work. Instead of closing them immediately or discouraging to post, let's help the users to improve the question posting a comment. The text building blocks will be there to help with it. I'm ...

It's a great idea, but it's not something that can be accomplished without code changes to the website, which are very unlikely to happen, especially given the "temporary" nature of the sandbox. It also isn't necessarily appropriate. Most people who have posted their riddles to Main and have had them put on hold go on to post them to the sandbox, but there ...

There is no official procedure. The status quo has been to delete them from the sandbox when they're posted on main. This has the benefits of: Keeping clutter in the sandbox to a minimum (it has a lot of answers) Keeping people who see the puzzle on main from going to the sandbox to try to find the answer (or clues to the answer). The downside of this is ...

I saw the Riley format going around and I like it, so I'm posting here first to get some feedback: My prefix takes what it was not meant to have My suffix shares what others have already shared My infix wants to wander the world But altogether, I'd rather just stay home riddle Hint: Are there any tags I'm missing from a Riley Riddle like this?...

What is this place? They brought me to this place last week. It is a place of knives, wires and pincers. Throughout day and night, the silence is broken by screams of unbearable agony and unprecedented terror. They put the wires on me and cut me with the knives when the pincers didn't work. I have slept here more safe and happy than ever before in my ...

I've kind of brought this up before, but speaking as someone who is a content creator in the puzzle world, I am actively disincentivized when it comes to posting here. I think it must be some larger site policy for stack exchange, but if I post something here it legally means I give up ownership of it. I'm trying to start a puzzle magazine but I can't even ...

Questions should no longer be closed just for not having been sandboxed. Now that the "hasn't been sandboxed" close reason has been deactivated, riddles are allowed to be posted on the main site without having been through the sandbox first. Leaving a big notice on several questions saying that they aren't is misleading and likely to confuse new users. The ...

I've posted wrap-ups for several puzzles already. I stuck them in as answers. I haven't done Riddled and Dismembered yet, so I'll post it here. There was a meta post that asked for riddles whose answer was flower. I did one and it was ok but I felt as I did it that it was "same old". I wanted to do something different. The feeling that I hadn't done justice ...

This is a rather short one but should be obvious to most users of this site (or not): What do you call a lot of pieces of paper from which a few have fallen down? Please give me some advide whether this would be a good puzzle.
